Front_Cover_07-11The Push n Pull journey this year has illustrated the elements required to create leaders who engage and promote safe behaviors. Perseverance, Motivation and Passion are 3 components harnessed by savvy leaders. Good leaders know that it takes persistence, and patience to perfect a good business team. But how does a leader create opportunities to engage and promote safe behaviors?

When a leader is persistent on setting goals and reaching goals in work, he/she has become involved in teaching the team how to be passionate about their work. This then has formulated a team that perceives themselves as a specific piece of the puzzle. Which is critical in reducing incidents at work. Because reducing accidents and incidents through safety programs is not just a matter of adding training and hoping for a rise in safety behaviors. Teams must feel like they have ownership in a project otherwise they become complacent and unmotivated, which typically leads to unsafe behaviors. As a leader teaches his team to appreciate their work it can, in turn, lead the individual into setting goals for themselves. These actions can create great habits and develop safer behaviors, because ultimately they feel ownership. This ownership has been one of the key elements discussed in the push n pull series. And for good reason! Ownership is not intellectual, it is a feeling. And a leader can change the way an individual feels by modeling positive behaviors. When a leader sets goals and achieves them with a team, it is a unanimous feeling of triumph. Soon you will see your team consciously choosing to set goals, because it feels good to succeed. As a leader you can be sure you have created passion in your team. Now they will, with guidance and support, feel motivated to finish each task with a sense of ownership and the determination to succeed.

As a leader, role model, mentor etc. it is important to remember that your perseverance, motivation and passion are important concepts in leadership. Practicing these elements can develop good habits and attitudes for your team as well as yourself. Remember, it is always easier to change your habits than to change your attitude. Changing your habits at work by bringing passion for success, will alter your attitude over time.
