What's Your Ammo?
What is it that keeps you going throughout the day? And I'm not asking about your 5 Hour Energy consumption. Even though life goes by in the blink of an eye, we still have events that make some weeks feel like they will never end. Work, family and other areas of your life can be in jeopardy of the habitual rut of unhappiness if you are not careful. Usually these spurts of dissatisfaction occur during stressful or mundane circumstances. The question then, is, whether or not you are actively planning and reflecting. When you actively plan you should purposely set aside time to think about what it is that motivates you to become better or plan to better your current situation. Making time to reflection can help you determine whether or not you are accelerating or improving your life. Grooming your behaviors starts with the foundation of good plans and the act of reflection. Being motivated and motivating others is not an easy task, but as mentors and leaders it is a necessary learned behavior. If you do not learn to set foals for yourself and your life, then what is your ammo (reason) for achieving or executing your business goals or family goals?
Everyone has that one special weapon or motivator they like to use to give them the intensity or desire to begin or continue on toward their goal. So what's your ammo? There are many behavioral motivators:
Job Security
Money
Interesting Job
Job Status
Social
Pressure
Recognition
Personal Growth
The list could go on and on.........
Being a leader, it is always easier to motivate others who are already motivated. Leaders can usually lead because they have acquired a relationship or earned respect. That is why it is always important to build relationships, you never know when you may be in a position to utilize these connections to better your team. Knowing what motivates each member in your team can lead to faster and better quality of work. Please note that when a member of your team is highly motivated he or she will also work more safely. Even though safety is a highly sought after commodity, it is not on top of anyones motivation list. It may be important to each of us but it is not the force that drives us to succeed. The motivators listed above are individual characteristics that factor in to what compels us to try harder, and so it is critical that we have the right person for the right job. That is why a GOOD leader knows who each of his team members are and what qualities they possess. A person who is Productivity goal oriented tends to need and value Achievements and therefore his attitude will be geared toward Self. On the other hand, a person who is Quality of Work oriented will value Friendships and his attitude will be geared toward his Coworkers' needs. Knowing who you are and what motivates you is as equally important as knowing what your coworkers' goals and needs are. Good leaders can lead due to relationship building. Leaders/Mentors know what motivational methods to use based on the individual's Ammo!

My Goals |
What I Need and Value |
Important to me |
A leader who has built relationships with his/her coworkers has created a positive work environment where policies, procedures, management, safety and community become essential to all. There are some factors that determine the type of leader you will become. Shelly E. Taylor, a UCLA psychology professor, explains that leaders who were nurtured, mentored, motivated and supervised well in the beginning will become prominent leaders. She goes as far as saying that the better a worker is treated by their supervisor or any other superior throughout their life can change a person physically, mentally and health wise. Ultimately a supervisor is looking to create an environment where workers are passionate about their work. Which in turn can lead to an increase of Incident Free Operations. Many times people have set goals, but for it to work we must be committed to our goals and reflection. Goals can affect what people pay attention to and how hard they work. Leaders that mentor the importance of setting goals can also see what is important for each member of his team and can create a great sense of community amongst his group. Goal setting has become a very important element for businesses as a motivational strategy.
