Front_Page_May_2011Take a moment and look around at the people you work with day in and day out, did you know that over half of them feel that their work is mundane and dull? With that being said, how safe do you feel knowing that due to this unsatisfied attitude they are prone to more human error? They could be having a bad day and be distracted, it could be that they feel like they have mastered their job so they take short cuts or are over confident. Accidents take place for multiple reasons and usually a persons attitude or behavior is the main cause. All of us can become infected with this workplace disease. If daily we performed the same tasks we would soon fail to notice the unsafe habits we had formed. This complacent attitude would soon lead to NEAR FAILURES and accidents (instead of calling an "almost accident" a near miss, why donʼt we call it by itʼs true name- a Near Failure).

Workplace complacency is an extremely dangerous learned behavior. And the more unsafe behaviors we develop without negative consequences, the more complacent we become. So how do we combat job complacency? One of the things I truly believe is that if you are not growing then you are dying. This could apply to many aspects of your life. The world is changing by leaps and bounds and this requires us to brush up on our skills more often. If you feel like work has become mundane and dull then you should re-evaluate what your initial intentions were when you started. Did you aspire for a better position, relocation, or better pay? These goals ensure that you are always bettering yourself. It is our internal gauge that helps us know when itʼs time for a tune up. If we remain complacent at work we increase the risk of an ʻEpic Fail". Workplace complacency can lead to many unsafe acts, which in turn can cause accidents with mild to severe consequences. Critical procedures can be overlooked and can perpetuate into unsafe habits. It is our choice to take the chances and take the shortcuts. Providing goals for yourself gives you the opportunity learn thereby changing your attitude and behaviors. Having this self assessment system in place helps keep you accountable to yourself and others. In turn you are able to make better decisions and stay focused. Most injuries and fatalities are not caused by unsafe conditions but by unsafe acts. Next time you see a near miss, put it in perspective and call it by itʼs real name- near failure.
