News Features Mentor's Corner Mother's Protection

I sometimes think it is mothers that make the world go round. It had been a long, grueling football game that Saturday morning. We just got through beating our latest opponent, and I was tired. I had given everything that my 7th grade body had to give. Our family was walking back to the car, me carrying my helmet in my hand, when I thought my mom had gone crazy! She had walked behind me and I could hear her getting upset about something. “Calvary Callender,” she said, “I want to know who did this to you!” Dad slowed down to meet up with her and started laughing. “I’m serious,” she said. Dad explained that I had the mud impression of a football cleat on my back. I tried to tell her not to worry about it, but she persisted. She wanted to go find the kid who did that and have a talk with him and his mother. I always knew that mom loved me, but in that moment it became something more. She wanted to protect me. I don’t think I have ever told her how much that simple gesture impacted me, but I have carried that very philosophy into my family dynamic. Protecting my family is one of my top priorities, and it all started with my mom.

Through the years, I have learned many life lessons from my mom. I learned to be frugal with money, how to clean, and how to fix a problem. Maybe most importantly, though, she helped teach me how to love my kids unconditionally.

The spring season marks a new beginning. We all look forward to green grass under our feet and a warm breeze in the air. Spring is also the time that we celebrate mothers. As Mother’s day fast approaches, I would encourage each of you to let that special mom in your life know how important they are to you. Maybe its your own mother, or the mother of your children, or even someone who was like a mother to you. Whoever it is, this spring season, let’s celebrate and encourage our mothers. They deserve it!
